STAFF SPOTLIGHT: MEET KAI cover

In recognition of World Drowning Prevention Day on Thursday 25th July, we’re proud to highlight one of our key leaders, our Hobsons Bay Regional Manager Kai. Based across both BayFit Leisure Centre and Laverton Aquatic Centre, Kai is not only a driving force behind operations but also a passionate advocate for the benefits of swimming!

We asked Kai to share a little about his swimming journey:

What inspired you to start swimming?
“I started swimming as a way to improve my physical and mental wellbeing. A few friends recommended it as a great reset from the stress of everyday life, and I felt the impact straight away.”

Kai’s current routine and favourite things about swimming
“My favourite thing about swimming is the chance to disconnect. No screens, no distractions, just the rhythm of the water. I often swim during my lunch break, and it gives me a fresh perspective for the rest of the day.”

Achieved goals and current targets
“My original goal was to swim 1km non-stop. Now I can comfortably swim 3km, and I’m working toward completing a 5km open water swim in 2026.”

Impact on fitness or wellbeing
“Swimming has made a huge difference to my overall fitness, especially my cardio endurance. It’s even improved my running. More importantly, it’s become a space for mental clarity and reflection.”

Advice for newcomers to the pool
“The beginning is tough, every lap feels like a mountain. But stay with it. Set small goals: start with 8 laps, then build to 10, 15, 20. Progress happens quicker than you think, and the rewards are worth it.”

As a leader across BayFit Leisure Centre and Laverton Aquatic Centre, Kai brings personal experience to his role, understanding firsthand the benefits of regular swimming and the importance of encouraging safe, consistent habits in the water.
