R U OK Day

R U OK Day cover

RU OK? Day is a vital reminder that a simple conversation can change a life, and our leisure centres offer the perfect low pressure environments to genuinely check in on your mates. Staying active together naturally breaks down barriers, making it easier to ask that all important question.

The Power of Side by Side Conversations

Sitting face to face can sometimes feel intimidating when discussing mental health or personal struggles. Engaging in a shared activity shifts the focus, easing the pressure and allowing conversations to flow naturally. Whether you are counting laps, or sweating it out in the gym, physical activity boosts endorphins and creates a safe, relaxed space to open up.

Great Spots to Reconnect

The Pool and Café: Swimming laps or relaxing in the aquatic area provides a calm, quiet atmosphere. Grabbing a coffee at the café after your session gives you the perfect, relaxed window to sit down and see how your friend is really doing.

Navigating the Conversation

If you notice a teammate, gym buddy, or friend seems a bit quiet or off their usual game, rely on the simple four step ALEC framework recommended by RU OK?:

Ask: Pick a relaxed moment during your activity and ask, "Are you OK?" or "What's been happening?"

Listen: Give them your full attention without interrupting or rushing to fix their problems. Sometimes people just need to be heard.

Encourage Action: Suggest they do something that might lighten the load, whether that is talking to a professional, prioritising rest, or just committing to another weekly workout together.

Check In: Pop a quick message or give them a call a few days later to see how they are tracking.

A workout, or a swim might just be the excuse you need to start a conversation that matters. Let’s look out for each other!
