Did you know that 276 lost their lives to drowning in Australia last year?

As we head into warmer weather let’s work together to keep our children safe. Please make sure you actively supervise your children at the Centre. That means being in the water with them if they are under 5 or weak swimmers. For older children please watch them at all times and avoid distractions such as mobile phones.

Below are prevention strategies of drowning from Royal Life Saving:

  • Active supervision by parents or carers of children
  • Be aware of pre-existing medical conditions
    and physical limitations
  • Understand the possible adverse effects of
    medications
  • Follow safety rules displayed around the pool area
  • Follow directions issued by staff and lifeguards
  • Inform a lifeguard if a non-swimmer, or of any
    relevant medical conditions
  • Learn swimming and water safety skills (find out about our BlueFit Swimming program here)

You can see Royal Life Saving’s 10 Year Analysis on Drowning here for more information.

With the winter season upon us, it becomes a little more difficult to get out of the house. However, swimming is a sport you can do all year round, and everyone can participate, especially when we have a heated indoor pool!

Here are our top 4 reasons why you and the family should hit up BayFit Leisure Centre:
  1. Swimming is one of the few sports you can do throughout your lifetime
  2. It does not require lots of special equipment and gear, all you really need is a swimsuit
  3. It creates a reason to get together— a good way to socialise with your family
  4. Did you know that swimming can boost your immune system? When cells in the body regularly get blood and oxygen, they function better

So what are you waiting for, grab your togs and let’s go!

We are excited to share that the Hobsons Bay City Council (HBCC) are undertaking a complete renovation of the learn to swim pools disability and family change room!

These new facilities will further compliment the recently renovated spa family change room. We look forward to seeing the final outcome! More details to come.

BlueFit is proud to have a dedicated and committed BlueFit Green team. This past year the team has been researching smart energy savings options and practices that will make all our sites in Australia more environmentally sustainable. We are implementing our initiatives in phases to ensure we are finding the best solutions to use in all our facilities.

Some initiatives are visible to customers and staff, such as the reduction of plastic in our cafes and the introduction of more drinking fountains to refill reusable bottles. Other initiatives are happening behind the scenes.

In our plant rooms, we have been installing variable speed drives (VSDs) on our mechanical equipment. These devices can power-down our equipment in times of low centre usage and power-up the equipment only when it is necessary – during peak usage. Our lights look the same, but many have already been replaced with LED fixtures. These fixtures are now significantly reducing our energy demands!

BlueFit Green’s next initiative is to introduce our own BlueFit “Keep Cup” and recycling bins throughout our centres. We are looking forward to seeing BlueFit blend more green in our surrounding environments, are you?
